Energy healing is one approach of complementary and alternative medicine that aids to balance the energy flow within the receiver. The method is employed to reduce stress and anxiety and assist holistic well-being. Today, let’s talk about Reiki healing, one type of energy healing that is getting more and more credit from health professionals and patients around the globe.
This article shares with you the basic information about Reiki — a safe, gentle, non-invasive way of natural hands-on, energy-based healing — to see if Reiki healing really works.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient and proven energy healing technique that assists relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety through gentle touch. Reiki practitioners use their hands to guide the flow of healthy energy through the body, improving the flow and balance of your own energy to support healing.

Master Mikao Usui discovered how to use and teach Reiki for healing in the early 1900s. The name Reiki stemmed from the Japanese words: rei meaning “universal” and ki meaning the universal life force energy that surrounds and flows through all living things. Nowadays, Reiki is used all over the world to complement other forms of health treatments.
Everything, including the human body, is made of energy. It is when our energy is low, imbalanced or stuck that we’re more likely to feel the effects of illness and stress. Reiki heals by replenishing and balancing the energy and bringing the physical body and energy field back into a state of balance. This can be implemented in-person or remotely with the same outcomes because energy is not limited by space or time.
The holistic benefits of Reiki healing
Reiki succeeds to improve just about any facet of life, from physical health, emotional well-being, stress and pain reduction to mental clarity and spiritual awareness. It can:
- – Promote inner peace and harmony.
- – Bring on a meditative state.
- – Clear the mind and improve focus.
- – Enhance learning, memory and mental clarity.
- – Help you sleep better.
- – Clear out energy blocks and balance the mind, body, and spirit.
- – Nurture the healing after injury or surgery or any traditional medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and kidney dialysis.
- – Cleanse physical and energetical toxins in the body and improve the immune system.
- – Promote natural self-healing.
- – Relieve pain and tension.
- – Help spiritual growth and emotional cleansing.
- – And so on.
Can Reiki healing replace conventional treatments?
Reiki is a natural, non-invasive method to help strengthen our own ability to heal and should not be used as a substitute for the emergency or required medical treatment by a medical practitioner. In fact, Reiki always aids other types of medical and therapeutic treatments, and it can improve the effectiveness of other types of healing.
On the other hand, if you’re already in good health which is great, regular Reiki treatments can strengthen your ability to respond to stress and serve as a form of preventive medicine. Since Reiki works to help sustain a state of physical and emotional balance, it does not only cure the problems but can also prevent them from ever developing or coming back. It is also a wonderful way to give yourself a little time out from your busy life.
What conditions does Reiki heal?
Reiki modality is used to heal the body, mind and spirit, and assist people suffering from many major and minor diseases. It is usually used as a complementary remedy in several “mainstream” hospitals nowadays.
Reiki isn’t specific to any particular type of disease or condition but may assist people with:
- – Cancer.
- – Chronic pain from migraine, arthritis, sciatica, etc.
- – Chronic fatigue.
- – Insomnia.
- – Respiratory problems.
- – Infertility.
- – Improve blood pressure.
- – Digestive problems.
- – Helps with menopausal symptoms.
- – Psychological distress, including depression and anxiety.
- – Stress-related illnesses.
Reiki can help accelerate the recovery from surgery or long-term sickness. Because Reiki supports our bodies in adapting to the medicine or treatment, it also tends to bring down the side effects. For example, chemotherapy patients who received Reiki noticed a significant decrease in side effects from treatment.
Moreover, as Reiki helps bring about inner peace and harmony, it can be a valuable tool in the pursuit of spiritual growth. Reiki can also heal and nourish personal relationships. Because Reiki unblocks you from the ability to give and receive love, it can open you up to the people around you and help your relationships heal and grow. Reiki offers relief during emotional distress, sorrow and grief. It cleans and clears the emotions, preventing them from being so draining and providing perspective.
How does Reiki healing work?
Reiki practitioners do not cause the healing, nor are they the source of that healing energy; they’re a channel for the energy or a conduit between the recipient and the universal life force energy. It is similar to the way a garden hose acts as a channel for water. The energy flows through the practitioner’s hands to the patient.
In fact, Reiki is the safest energy healing! Everyone can give it a try even healthy people as it can aid you even more physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. And you can get the most benefits from a Reiki session by preparing yourself before the session.
What happens during a Reiki healing session?
A Reiki healing session typically lasts about 45 to 90 minutes. During a session, the client lies on a massage table or sits on a chair comfortably fully clothed, as the Reiki practitioner gently places their hands, palms down, on or just above the body on certain energy centers. They go through a series of 12 to 15 different hand positions. In each position, the practitioner will put their hands as long as the energy is still flowing from their hands to that location. There is no pressure, massage or manipulation involved in a Reiki session like other touch therapies.

How does Reiki feel like?
During the treatment, the recipient may experience the energy in the form of sensations like heat, cold, vibration, pulsing or tingling where the Reiki practitioner has placed their hands or they feel the energy move throughout their body. They may see colors or flashes of light. Feelings and emotions that have been concealed deep down may come up to the surface. On the other hand, there will be some people who do not recognize any differences or changes at all. And that is okay. Try not to analyze it too much, just relax and allow the experience to unfold. Most people feel very relaxed and peaceful during the treatment, and many even fall asleep during the process.
Generally, the benefits of Reiki have been experienced widely throughout countries. Furthermore, there are no harm or side effects to trying this complementary health approach. Anyone can benefit from a Reiki healing session and start their own journey in self-healing.

There is no better way to really understand Reiki than experiencing it yourself by having a Reiki healing session with me (book here). My Reiki system is Usui/Holy Fire III developed by Senior Reiki Master William Lee Rand. He is the president of ICRT (reiki.org) and the founder of the Center for Reiki Research. You also can train with me to be able to connect and use Reiki by yourself and share with others, through three levels of Reiki training.

Thanks for the article! Has a lot of information and goes straight to the point, as Reiki cannot “heal” directly, but can improve our immune system by assisting people! I totally agree as I tried a lot of different things until I knew and began Reiki sessions. I´ll keep in mind your words “channel for the energy or a conduit between the recipient and the universal life force energy”, nice way to put it!!
Thanks again!
Hi Johnny, thanks a lot for reading and leaving your comment!
I am so glad you found the post informative. It is great to hear that you enjoyed your Reiki sessions ^_^. Yes, Reiki practitioners are not the ones who do the healing, the clients are the one who decides that it is time for themselves to be healed and Reiki is one tool out there, a beautiful and powerful tool!
Cheers,
Grace
Hi Grace
I have not heard of the Reiki technique before now, but I’m excited to have landed on your website. I researched natural ways to relieve stress rather than swallowing several tablets and came upon your article.
I’m not surprised that people fall asleep during the process; I can imagine the feeling. I guess I will fall asleep too.
Of course, it can’t replace an emergency; it’s still an interesting technique I would like to try when the need arises.
Thank you.
Cheers

I would always go with natural ingredients or methods. Maybe it will not help you always, but you will definitely have no side effects. There are so many things and ways that we can help ourselves. Many people I know, go to the beach, and meditate, or watch the sun, and it really helps, so I am a strong believer in these treatments. Thank you.
Hi Ivan
Thanks for your comment! We are programmed to give away our power to external factors and lose the connection to nature and our own inner power. Reiki is one of the tools out there that empower you to heal yourself and others on the energy level which is much deeper than just curing the symptoms on the surface!
Cheers,
Grace
Thanks for the article Grace. it is so informative and straight to the point. I have not heard about this before until now. since Reiki cannot “heal” directly, but can improve our immune system, it will be a good start for me to tackle high blood pressure and indigestion that have limited me in many ways. thanks so much and keep the good work ma.

Thanks Nathan for leaving your comment! Reiki does the healing, from the root, energetically. So you know that you are taken good care of by the loving and powerful Universal Life Force.
All the best,

Many people that I know swear by Reiki healing, and ten years ago these same people didn’t believe in it. I think this is due to the fact that there is no pressure on the body like you would feel in a massage, so people think it doesn’t work.
I have been for a session once before, and I found it incredibly relaxing, although I probably should have gone back and done a few more sessions to reap the long-term benefits, I must say that my insomnia was a lot better for a while after that.
Yes our brains are wired to only believe in things that we can perceive with our 5 normal senses and thus, miss a lot of wonderful things in life due to that limiting belief system. I am glad you tried Reiki once and benefited from it. You can always go back and enjoy more from now on! ^_^
Reiki healing does in fact bring about a state of being in the recipient that allows the beneficial flow of energy to envelope and to intensify the healing state. Once a person allows for the possibility of healing from the laying on of hands then natural healing can begin. There are other similar types of pyschic healing that are similar to Reiki from different parts of the world and at times from different religions. A positive influence no matter where it comes from is valid for the art of healing.
